Lurking

Creature Concept

Freehand Drawing

Marker, colored pencil, pencil ink.

Adept in creating preliminary artwork for a range of applications,  my imagination leads down some odd rabbit holes sometimes.

I thought of this critter while swimming laps in the pool one day: I was contemplating all the slugs we see hiking in Forest Park.

Ever Watchful

Creature Concept

Rough Freehand Sketch

Marker, ink.

Communicating what doesn’t exist, this is an example of where my process begins…rough sketching.

I first thought of this little guy after a hiking trip to the Badlands National Park in South Dakota.  Observing and watching prairie dogs inspired me.

Robo Stomper

Tech Concept

Freehand Drawing

Marker, colored pencil, pencil, ink.

The hood of an older car passing me by while sitting enjoying coffee triggered this one. I began with loose sketches and almost immediately had a final drawing on the first try. This character rolls into a ball like a pillbug when recharging, and exists to smash and destroy things.

Alligator

Game Character

Freehand Drawing

Marker, ink.

Final reference drawing of one of two original character designs. These characters were made into actual plastic game pieces as part of a counting game for children. I began with sketches, many iterations, until we got what we wanted for a final rendering.

Headhunter

Character Concept

Freehand Sketch

Marker, ink.

Idea for an original character I thought of one day. I was concepting nightmarish things like zombies and thought of this guy, who raids camps and villages at the behest of a dark power.

Silly Villains

Character Concepts

Freehand Drawings

Marker, ink.

An assortment of rather silly original villains I thought of one day, as part of a rapid iteration exercise. I often concept and iterate on characters in a range of styles, from casual and humorous to stylized realism…just to see what comes out.

Beast & Rider

Creature Concept

Freehand Drawing

Marker, colored pencil, pencil, ink.

Color study of an original beast and rider I though of one day. I was originally experimenting with color palettes and pairings, but somehow went from generating swatch families to these two…I have no idea how that happened.

Thorn Tree

Flora & Fauna Concept

Freehand Sketch

Marker, ink.

I was taking a class in botanical illustration when I got the idea for an alien tree. It started as a pencil comp and I later did a second version which is this one.
